Due to the unusually wet winter we had this year (similar to the one we had two years ago), crane flies are back in abundance. Are Crane Flies Harmful?
The short answer to this question is “no.” Adult crane flies are not harmful. Though they look like large mosquitos, and are in fact related to mosquitos, they do not suck blood or spread disease. If you have crane flies in or around your home, there is no need to panic.
Crane flies in their larval stage can do damage to lawns and young plants, but only if the infestation is severe. You can help keep crane flies from reproducing on your property by making sure the ground doesn’t stay too wet. Don’t water your lawn at night, and make sure your drains are working properly.
How Do I Keep Crane Flies Out of My House?
You’ve probably noticed by now that crane flies are attracted to light. To keep them from coming in your house, turn off all lights near your door as you enter or exit, and of course, don’t leave your doors open. On nice days, when you want some fresh air in your house, only open windows that have tight-fitting screens on them.
You can also control the population of crane flies near your home by attracting their natural predators—birds. Put out a bird feeder or bird bath and let the birds snack on the crane flies near your home.
Can Crane Flies Be Considered Beneficial Insects?
Crane flies, sometimes called “mosquito hawks” or “skeeter eaters” have a reputation for eating mosquitos. In reality, this is not the case. Crane flies don’t eat other insects. In fact, adult crane flies don’t eat much at all. They have a very short life span and sometimes don’t eat at all in their adult stage.
