As it gets warmer outside you may start noticing more ant activity inside your home or business. That’s because ants are more active during the Summer months, as they leave their nest to forage for food.
There are several species of ants that you may encounter in Southern California, including Argentine Ants, Crazy Ants, Harvester Ants or “Red Ants,” Little Black Ants, Odorous House Ants, and Red Imported Fire Ants.
Argentine Ants are the most common species in the Inland Empire and North San Diego County. Estimates show that 95% of the ants along the California coastline and 80% of the ants specifically in Temecula, Fallbrook, Oceanside, and surrounding areas are Argentine ants.
So, how can you keep the ants outside?
Here are some good practices to follow to fight an infestation:
- Store food items correctly. Don’t leave open food on the counter overnight. Keep them in air-tight Tupperware containers. That can include cereal boxes and other products that cannot close tight enough.
- Seal cracks and crevices. Ants are getting in from somewhere. Use caulk to seal up openings near windows, doors, and other areas that connect to the outside.
- Keep your home or business clean. Keeping your area tidy is the best way to generally keep pests away. That includes taking out the trash, washing the dishes, and vacuuming the floor.
