Spring is here. Flowers are blooming, birds are chirping, and families across Riverside and North San Diego counties are de-cluttering their homes.
If you plan on doing some spring cleaning this year, here are some good practices to follow to promote a pest-free home.
Remove Clutter
Pests and rodents love hiding in dark cramped spaces. Clutter can create an environment for many critters to thrive, such as cockroaches, ants, and mice.
Tackling clutter may seem like a daunting task, but creating a system can help make the mess easier to break down. A good starting point is dividing the clutter into three categories: trash, donation, and keepsakes.
Mind Your Foods
Pests are always looking for an easy snack. Make sure dried foods are stored in closed containers. This includes pet food! While you want to keep your fur babies fed, make sure they don’t leave a mess behind. Pet food that spills outside of the bowl can leave remnants on the carpet or hard floor which can attract ants or rodents.
Check for Leaks or Standing Water
In addition to food, pests also need a water source. Check under your sinks for any potential water leaks.
Also look both inside your house and around your property for items that may collect pools of water, such as toys, pots, and bird feeders. Water that has been stagnant is a breeding ground for several insects, including mosquitos.
Keep Things Clean
The best way to keep pests out of your home is by cleaning your space on a regular basis. This means, don’t let the dishes pile too high or trash linger too long. Old foods and its smells can attract the wrong kind of guest.
