Now that we’re in the hottest part of the year in the Temecula, Murrieta, and Fallbrook areas, you may be noticing more ant activity at your home or business. Why is this? Ants, like humans, like comfortable temperatures. If it’s too cold out, they’ll look for someplace warmer to hang out. If it’s extremely hot outside, they’ll try to find a place to hang out that’s cooler.
In addition, ants need water to survive. In the summer months in the Temecula Valley, water can be especially hard to come by naturally. Because of this, ants often go in search of water inside homes.
As we mentioned in a previous blog post on our site, there are some things you can do to help discourage ants from invading your home, such as cleaning up crumbs and spills, putting food in airtight containers, and not leaving out pet food. While these points are all valid, they typically don’t go far enough to keep ants out of homes in this area. The Temecula, Murrieta, and Fallbrook areas are notorious for ant infestations. These tips alone won’t do much to stop an ant problem around here.
Is DIY Ant Control Effective?
The first option for ant control that people often resort to is to go to the home improvement store and buy an insecticide off of the shelf for $10 to $20. Many of these products kill ants on contact and claim to help prevent ants from coming back, but most homeowners who have tried them will tell you that the ants, unfortunately, keep coming back. These products may be effective in other areas of the country, or even in other areas of California, but here, they are rarely effective at keeping ants at bay for any substantial period of time.
Even less effective are the methods using common household items like vinegar, dish soap, or borax. You, of course, are welcome to try these products, but shouldn’t hold out high hopes that they’ll do a good job of keeping ants out of your home.
